A Legendary Location with a History of Hospitality

“Plates” has a house to call home that weaves the tradition of historic Larchmont with the creativity of its new generation. 121 Myrtle Boulevard, across the street from the train station, was originally constructed as a rest stop for New Haven Line conductors and train engineers at the turn of the century. It then housed a butcher shop (and the butcher!), but was converted into a “speakeasy” in the late 1920’s. By 1950 a man named George Carl turned the charming house into a restaurant “Carl’s on the Park”, at which point it became a local hotspot for the Sound shore communities. Senior Larchmont locals today speak fondly of a meeting point for commuters and their wives, or a Sunday night at Carl’s after sailing at the Larchmont Yacht Club.

This freestanding building is surrounded by a park and a pond, creating a bucolic country setting. Its three stories are built of wood with a brick and stucco exterior. During the 6 month renovation the infrastructure was reinforced, new equipment was installed, new finishes were added to the interior, and the 1960’s seating arrangement of banquettes was added back. Objective: downtown, yet down home!
